This is CKNY and I'm YANISA TRIUAMWITTHAYANON with weather. We couldn't ask for a better day for the first day of Spring. Right now it's fifteen degrees and clear. We're expecting blue skies throughout the day. Though there is only a ten percent chance of showers, this good weather can't last forever. It's raining cats and dogs up north, so we should see rain by morning. Don't forget your umbrella tomorrow. Now, stay tuned for local news.

Weather Report

Hi, I'm Panatcha Thanomwong. This is your weekend weather report. This morning we're seeing sun with cloudy periods as well as a few flurries. Right now I am at the top of Mount Raven where it is plus two and expected to rise to about six degrees by noon. Overnight temperatures will probably drop to at least minus seven. Tomorrow's forecast calls for more flurries with a high of zero and a low of minus twelve. With the wind chill factor, that could put us at a record low of minus twenty. Conditions are perfect for skiing this weekend, but if you're heading out to the slopes tomorrow, please remember to bundle up to avoid frostbite. We'll go back to the newsroom now for a look at what's in sports.

Activity 3 Coldweather213034401

Weekend of Jan. 22-23 May be Brutally Cold

With snow on the ground in about 70 percent of the nation and Arctic air stirring over northern Canada, the path is paved for more outbreaks of cold air for the next 10 to 14 days in the northern U.S.
Chunks of Arctic air will continue to be flung southward into the northern and eastern U.S. through the third week of January.
Most of the time through nearly the end of the month will be much colder than for even an average January temperature scheme, negating a little temperature rebound this weekend and perhaps even for a day or so next week.
The coldest air of the season so far, and perhaps the winter, may invade the northern Plains Wednesday to Friday of next week and would set the stage for wicked cold from the Midwest to the Northeast during the weekend of Jan. 22-23, 2011.
More and more of our tools and the experience of pattern recognition among AccuWeather.com meteorologists are pointing toward a multi-day stretch of below-zero temperatures for the northern Plains and the Upper Midwest.
A day or two of below-zero high temperatures could reach as far south and east as Chicago. Near-zero high temperatures are possible during the fourth full weekend of the month in Detroit and other Midwest cities that rarely experience the extreme temperatures.
Nasty cold would be felt in the Northeast as well with the potential for two to four days with highs in the teens in the I-95 zone. A couple of near-zero days may be experienced over upstate New York and interior New England.
Snowcover is an effective way to get places cold and keep them cold, especially during January, when the effects of the sun's rays are minimal, and there is plenty of snowcover over much of the northern two-thirds of the nation.
Computer-generated temperatures used in long-range temperature forecasts will not capture the magnitude of the cold blast. This includes the long-range temperatures found on AccuWeather.com city forecasts.
This type of air is most extreme in the low levels of the atmosphere and tends to slip by computer models until a few days out.
At least it appears the worst of the cold will aim more to the east, rather than plunge deep into the South and the Southwest. Many fruits and vegetables are grown in California, southern Texas and Florida this time of the year.
Even so, the cold air will be intense enough to cause problems with frozen water pipes in poorly heated buildings over the interior South and in the Midwest and Northeast.
Some communities were already experiencing problems with busted water mains as frost and the resultant expanding ground penetrates deeper than many recent years.

Winter Weather Might Lead To State Of Emergency In Pennsylvania: People Worried

Pennsylvania, Feb 6,It is the first week of February but the winter weather is still causing disturbances in the everyday lives of people. As per the latest weather reports, a strong winter storm is heading toward the East Coast region and can cause heavy snowfall leading to road blockages in different parts of the country. The reports indicate that southern Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, central and north Virginia, east Virginia as well as New Jersey are among the places, which are anticipated to receive the maximum hit by this storm. New reports of winter storm followed by snowfall has created a panic among the people and they anticipate whether Pennsylvania would have to declare a state of emergency after this storm.

The weather forecast indicates that Baltimore and Washington would also be affected by the adverse winter weather and can experience a snow cover of around two feet. It has been reported that people should adopt all precautionary measures and stock their basic requirements as roads might become ‘impassable’, after the storm. People who do not have any urgent requirements are suggested to stay indoor for avoiding any inconvenience in the winter weather.

According to the weather reports, the snow storm that is approaching the East Coast of the country might wreck a havoc on the traffic. It has been reported that the adverse weather condition might cause hindrances in air-traffic as well as road traffic of different states. The reports indicate that some of the leading Airline services have already started to cancel flights to avoid any kind of mishap.

Weekly Weather Report

Good morning, this is Chosita Kwanvipitkan with your Weekly weather report. As the picture suggests, winter has returned to parts of the British Isles this weekend. Its wintry weather with a vengeance and really severe conditions developing over northern Scotland blizzards there. Heavy snowfall strong winds survival conditions really up in the mountains of Scotland not a place to be this weekend. That’s how the weather’s looking through the weekend probably most of that wintry weather will be across much of Scotland. By Sunday perhaps some brighter skies just edging into the northern isles with some of that wintry weather slip dipping south over the border into Northern England. Now, gale force winds and temperatures below freezing I mentioned survival conditions. These are the sort of temperatures it’s going to feel like and up into the mountains of Scotland. Well, it’s going to feel as though the temperature is 20° below freezing and that along with those blizzards not very nice at all. That's all for today's weather.

Sports Affairs Council releases list of Taiwan’s top sports and exercise regions
The Sports Affairs Council has unveiled a list of the top sports and exercise regions in Taiwan. Hsinchu County residents were found to be the biggest sports and exercise lovers while the outlying islands of Kinmen and Matsu were rated as having the best sports environments.

The new Sports Affairs Council report has Hsinchu County first, Taichung City second, and Chiayi City third as the localities that most like sports and exercise. Taipei City may have hosted international sporting events and offers the best access to sports information, but it finished only ninth in the survey

We all know that Taipei has excellent sports facilities, but based on population numbers they are still inadequate. Many office workers in Taipei, especially in the 30-34 age bracket who have just started careers or become parents, are the group least likely to exercise. As for the places with the best sports environments, the outlying islands of Kinmen, Matsu and Penghu took the top three spots.

In the case of Kinmen, they’ve been extremely aggressive when it comes to their sports facilities, from the days when sports were run by the Ministry of Education to the present. The percentage of people who say they regularly participate in sports or exercise has risen to 26.1 percent in 2010, double the number of seven years ago, an indication that the council’s campaign to turn Taiwan into a sports island may gradually be delivering results.

And what are Taiwan’s three favorite sports? According to the survey, they’re walking, hiking, and jogging.

North Korea bedevils more powerful South Korea and US with threat of 'unlimited ruthlessness'

Good evening ladies and gentleman,I'm Phiphatnaree Techapholphiphat with the evening news. POCHEON, South Korea - Sleek fighter jets slice through the gray sky above a barren valley. Tanks and troops race across the frozen ground below. Helicopters hover in perfect formation, strafing the hills with fire.

South Korean drills like this one last month send a clear, calculated message: North Korea, despite its threats to turn the South's main city of Seoul into a "sea of fire" cannot compete with such advanced firepower. A military comparison would seem to give the South a lopsided victory, especially when its superpower ally, the United States, is factored in.

The North, however, makes up for its shortcomings with a vast and loyal force overseen by leaders with a reputation for ruthlessness and meticulously planned surprise attacks. That will not win a war — North Korea would almost certainly lose a conventional face-to-face confrontation — but it allows the North to stand up to the wealthier and better equipped South.

It's an equation that has long bedeviled both the United States and South Korea and left them looking strangely impotent in the face of North Korean attacks, most recently after the Nov. 23 shelling of a front-line South Korean island that killed two civilians and two marines. How to respond to such aggression will likely be a topic of talks when U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates visits Seoul on Friday.

Mild And Cloudy
It's a very mild start to the day across many areas with temperatures already in double figures - much higher than they have been for a couple of months in many regions. However, it is still rather chilly across central and north-eastern Scotland although even here temperatures are above freezing with a slow thaw of lying snow continuing.

However, with the milder conditions comes a lot of dull and cloudy weather with outbreaks of rain and drizzle in many areas, particularly towards southern parts of England as well as over north-eastern Scotland this morning. Not an awful lot will change today with many places remaining dull and cloudy with further light rain at times, and it will be quite misty across much of Scotland as the milder air spreads in over the cold land. Some brighter spells may develop towards eastern areas sheltered from the south-westerly winds, but these will be few and far between. Meanwhile, the heaviest of the rain is again likely to be towards the southwest, and we continue to have a Weather Watch in effect with the risk of localized flooding increasing.

Further bursts of rain will spread north-eastwards at times tonight, with the heaviest rain again likely to be reserved for south-western areas. There will be some drier intervals, and with the breeze and cloud it will be a pretty mild night for most places with temperatures in parts of the south remaining in double figures. Friday will be another mild and breezy day with cloudy skies and spells of rain tending to clearer away to the east to leave brighter conditions but with blustery showers around western coasts. A quick look at the weekend suggests wet and windy weather will spread to many areas on Saturday, with further wet weather likely across some northern and western areas on Sunday whilst the southeast is likely to see the driest conditions and it will remain mild everywhere.

Japan, S. Korea Urge Actions from North Korea
affraid

The top diplomats of Japan and South Korea said Saturday that North Korea should take concrete steps to scrap its nuclear arsenal before six-party disarmament talks can resume.

After a meeting in Seoul with visiting Japanese Foreign Minister Seiji Maehara, South Korean Foreign Minister Kim Sung-Hwan told a news conference that Pyongyang must show true commitment toward denuclearization through specific actions. Kim did not elaborate.

Maehara said before engaging in dialogue with the North, it was first necessary that Pyongyang show it is serious about carrying out its own promise to denuclearize.

The North quit six-party nuclear disarmament talks in April of 2009 and conducted its second atomic weapons test a month later.

The talks, chaired by China, also include the two Koreas, Japan, the United States and Russia.

1 mln Lankans flee floods

Flooding in Sri Lanka has forced more than one million people out of their homes, the government said Thursday as it began distributing emergency food, clothing and bedding.

At least 23 people have died during a week of monsoon floods, with the centre and east of the island worst hit by rising water levels and mudslides.

A spokesman for the disaster management centre in Colombo said the eastern district of Batticaloa, which saw bloody fighting in the civil war that ended in 2009, was badly affected after heavier than usual seasonal rains.

"Some 541,000 people have been displaced in Batticaloa district alone where we have set up 275 camps to accommodate them," the spokesman said, adding that a total of 1,081,000 people have been displaced.

More than 350,000 people have taken shelter in state-run relief camps while other displaced people have moved to higher ground, often staying with friends or relatives, he said.

Retired school principal K. Ratnavel, 63, said half of the coastal village of Ailadivembu, about 60 kilometres (40 miles) south of the Batticaloa town, was under water.

"My house is under six feet (two metres) of water and I moved into a government building with my wife and three children," Ratnavel told AFP by telephone. "We only have the clothes we are wearing. Everything else is lost."

"There are about 15,000 people at the local council office where we are sheltering and most of them need clothing."

He said many homes devastated by the December 2004 tsunami were affected by floods.

Rising water and continued rain have swamped vast tracks of land and cut off villages, television pictures showed.

President Mahinda Rajapakse said in remarks published in the state-run Daily News that it was "the duty of all to join hands and help them (the victims) at this hour of need without any discrimination or petty considerations."

Bad weather forced Rajapakse to abandon a helicopter tour of flood-affected areas on Wednesday.

Security forces have been assisting the relief operations and 3,000 soldiers have already been deployed in the east. Air force helicopters and navy boats were also helping out.

The United Nations and local and international aid agencies are assisting relief operations.

Seven trucks loaded with UNICEF supplies, including water tanks, tarpaulins, chlorine tablets, sleeping mats and cooking gear, have been sent to Ampara and Batticaloa districts.

"We are helping the government to collect information on needs, which will be compiled into a flash appeal, to rally donors to support and expand ongoing national efforts," said Neil Buhn, UN chief representative in Colombo.

The international charity Oxfam said distributing food and drinking water was a priority.

"The water levels are very high and in some parts of Batticaloa town we now have boats instead of buses," said Oxfam's flood response coordinator S. Raguraamamurthy.

Sri Lanka depends on monsoon rains for irrigation and power generation, but the seasonal downpours frequently cause death and damage to property in low-lying areas as well as mountainous regions.

The island's two main monsoon seasons run from May to September and December to February.

Good Morning. Welcome back to reutar-breaking news. I'm Pornsiri
Let's beginning with this; The United States is sending battle tanks to Afghanistan for the first time in the nine-year-old war against the Taliban, the Washington Post reported on Friday.

Citing unnamed U.S. officers and defense officials, the paper said General David Petraeus, commander of the U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan, approved the deployment last month.

"The deployment of a company of M1 Abrams tanks, which will be fielded by the Marines in the country's southwest, will allow ground forces to target insurgents from a greater distance -- and with more of a lethal punch -- than is possible from any other U.S. military vehicle," the Post said.

The initial deployment calls for 16 tanks to be used in parts of Helmand province, where fighting rages between Marines and Taliban guerrillas, the paper said.

It said Canadian and Danish troops have used a small number of tanks in southern Afghanistan.

with weather A mostly rather cloudy start, but predominantly dry, with near-normal January temperatures coupled with clearing skies overnight leading to some frost and freezing fog. Thicker cloud likely in central and eastern areas at first perhaps giving some drizzle, with possible rain in the north and northwest giving milder-than-typical conditions here. Towards the first weekend, rain and showers in the northwest perhaps extending to other areas of the country at times. The first week as a whole should see breezy conditions easing, with the strongest winds shifting from northern and eastern parts to the north and northwest. Probably becoming more unsettled towards early February, with weather from the west or southwest likely bringing spells of rain and near-normal temperatures to northwestern parts, with the southeast drier, clearer and colder. affraid

Good morning, this is Gronggan t. with your Monday weather report. The heatwave that slowed everybody down this weekend is showing no signs of letting up this week. Our meteorologists suggest that today's temperature could climb to as high as 40 degrees Celsius by the late afternoon. Right now, only an hour after sunrise, the temperature here at the airport is already 29 degrees. However, there is relatively no humidity in the air, so it feels quite comfortable out here at the moment. Unfortunately, there is also no rain in the forecast for the next five days. This is bad news for the thirsty forest fires that are raging across the interior of our province. Looks like setting up a tent in the backyard may be the only way to catch some sleep tonight if you don't have airconditioning. That's all for today's weather. Stay tuned for the morning traffic report

Activity 3 Empty South Africa declares flood disaster

Post  suttikarn suttiprasert 21st January 2011, 08:59

Activity 3 50849172304southernafri
South Africa has declared eight of its nine provinces disaster areas after 41 people died in floods in a month.
Co-operative Government Minister Sicelo Shiceka said the flood damage is estimated at $51 million (£32 million).
South Africa's airforce has been assisting in rescue efforts and the recovery of bodies since the weekend.
About 10 people have also died in floods in neighbouring Mozambique and more than 10,000 people have been evacuated from their homes.
Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe have also been affected by heavy rains.
President Jacob Zuma last week formed a ministerial task force to tackle the issue, led by Mr Shiceka.
Mr Shiceka told the BBC his team would also look at long-term issues.
"Among other things we are looking at, is that people must not build in flood plains."
"People who have been displaced must not go back," said the minister.
Officials say people in informal settlements throughout the country have been worst hit, as they are often built in basins and near rivers.
Western Cape is the only province which has not been declared a disaster area but officials say they are monitoring the situation there.
Meteorologists say southern Africa's floods are caused by a natural cycle called the El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO), which has also been linked to recent flooding in Australia and the Philippines.

A winter storm that pummelled southern US states in the last few days has now hit the north-east, causing travel disruption in the air and on the roads.
Eight inches (20cm) of snow fell on Central Park in New York City and up to 12in in New Jersey and Connecticut.
Hundreds of flights have been cancelled and commuters faced major disruption to road and rail services.
At least 14 people died in snow-related incidents earlier in the week as storms hit the less-prepared southern US.
More than 2ft (60cm) of snow fell in parts of Connecticut, where police responded to about 900 car crashes, minor collisions and stranded vehicles.
The storm system forced the cancellation of hundreds of flights in airports in states across the north-east and suspended train travel between New York City and Boston in Massachusetts due to a power system failure near Boston.
"You can't see across the street. The wind and snow is blowing about 40mph (64km/h) sideways," Massachusetts resident Artie Perrin told the Associated Press news agency.
Roughly 70,000 households in Massachusetts and 8,700 individuals in Rhode Island were left without power on Wednesday, according to the state emergency agencies.
The National Weather Service reported on Wednesday that there was snow on the ground in every US state except for Florida, including Hawaii - which had 7in on the top of the Mauna Kea mountain.
"I think it has happened in the past, but it's not very often that it happens," said weather service spokesman James Peronto.

Winter survival strategies from the USA's snowiest airports
By Harriet Baskas, special for USA TODAY

Like the plowed snow at many airports, registrations for the 45th annual International Aviation Snow Symposium are beginning to pile up. Held each April, most often in snowstorm-prone Buffalo, the symposium bestows awards on airports that excel in battling the white stuff and offers airport staff a chance to chill out and swap war stories about what went right or wrong, weather-wise, during the previous winter.
So far this season, storms have triggered the cancellation of thousands of flights and forced the temporary closing of many airports. That means there'll be plenty to talk about at this year's conference, as attendees try to take in tactics to make you less likely to get stuck at an airport next winter.

BRISBANE, Australia, Jan 13 (Reuters)
- Floods left parts
of Australia's third-biggest city on Thursday looking like a
war zone in need of years of reconstruction, the state premier
said, while fresh threats loomed with a cyclone forecast
offshore. The floods across the state of Queensland have killed at
least 19 people, 12 of whom died in the Toowoomba area inland,
and 61 were missing, the state government said. Toowoomba and the Lockyer Valley region, west of state
capital Brisbane, were devastated by tsunami-like flash
flooding on Monday. Large parts of Brisbane have become muddy lakes, with an
entire waterfront cafe among the debris washing down the
Brisbane River, a torrent that has flooded 12,000 homes in the
city of 2 million and left 118,000 buildings without power. Aerial views of Brisbane showed a sea of brown water with
rooftops poking through the surface. "What I'm seeing looks more like a war zone in some
places," Queensland Premier Anna Bligh told reporters after
surveying the disaster from the air. "All I could see was
their rooftops ... underneath every single one of those
rooftops is a horror story."

Spain 1 Netherlands 0 after extra time (Johannesburg) 11 July 2010
Andres Iniesta scored late in extra time as European champions Spain lifted the World Cup for the first time and condemned the Netherlands to their third defeat in a World Cup final. Stekelenburg made a diving save to keep out a header from Ramos in the 5th minute and 6 minutes later Ramos got into the box and drove the ball across goal but Heitinga diverted it over the bar. Casillas got down to turn a shot from Robben round the post just before the break and got the better of Robben again in the 61st minute with a trailing foot as the Dutchman was through on goal. Heitinga allowed a low cross to reach Villa in front of goal in the 69th minute but made amends with a last ditch block, and in the 77th minute Spain came close again but Ramos saw his free header from a corner fly over the bar. Robben ran towards goal in the 83rd minute but the physical presence of Puyol and the reaction of Casillas averted the danger, as did the foot of Stekelenburg 5 minutes into extra time when Farbregas was through on goal for Spain. A minute later Mathijsen headed the ball over from a corner and in the 101st minute a shot from van Bronckhorst was deflected into the side netting. Heitinga who was one of the 13 players booked in this match received his 2nd yellow and took an early shower for a foul in the 109th minute and with 4 minutes of extra time left the ball broke to Iniesta in the box who hammered it past Stekelenburg into the far corner to win the World Cup for Spain.

Autralia Flooding

More than 1,000 people have been evacuated from an outback town in the Australian state of New South Wales, after days of flooding.

Two areas of the state have been declared natural disaster areas after days of heavy rains swelled rivers and left farms cut off.

As water levels threatened to reach 5.5m (18ft), up to 1,200 people were moved from the town of Coonamble.

It comes after summer wildfires wreaked havoc on the other side of the country.

Sunday's evacuation order for Coonamble was issued because of concern about the state of levees holding back the nearby Castlereagh river.

"We are looking at a flood peak in the early hours of Monday morning at around 5.5m (18ft)," Phil Campbell, from the State Emergency Service, told state radio.

"That particular flood height does give us some concern regarding the levee that does protect 224 properties within Coonamble and, as such, an evacuation order has been issued."

Coonamble resident Ken Baker told AP television the river was the highest he had seen it in 60 years of living in the town.

Despite the damage, a number of farmers welcomed the rains, which follow a long drought.

Last week, wildfires threatened the city of Perth in Western Australia after razing dozens of homes and consuming thousands of acres of land.

Residents in the Queensland city of Brisbane have been warned to expect more flooding, as waters continue to swamp towns in the state of Victoria. Officials say the unusually high tide expected in Brisbane on Friday could inundate low-lying areas and that more rain could make matters worse. In Victoria, meanwhile, there are warnings that some flooded communities could be cut off for days. About a quarter of the state has now been affected by the floods. Most of the 3,500 residents of Kerang have left their homes, although a levee continued to hold back the worst of the flood. Officials said they were concerned about the ability of the levee to withstand high flood levels for an extended period of time. In Domboola, residents evacuated ahead of a peak on the Wimmera River. "This flood event is still far from over," said Tim Wiebusch, director of operations for the State Emergency Service. "We are likely to see this flood emergency continuing for at least another seven to ten days. "The floods in the south continue to threaten 72 towns across Victoria.
